European Mathematical Cup
The European Mathematical Cup (EMC, https://emc.mnm.hr/) is an International high school math competition organized by the Croatian association Young Gifted Mathematicians Marin Getaldić (www.mnm.hr) in cooperation with esteemed professors and university students.
Math and Science Club is honored to serve as one of the two organizers for the 13th EMC in the United States.
The competition took place on Saturday, December 21st. Participants had four hours to solve four challenging problems similar to the IMO problems, one from each of the following areas: algebra, combinatorics, geometry and number theory. This year, eight high school students from across the country participated in the competition.
STEM Party
We hosted a STEM Party with lots of fun, hands-on experiments on May 19th 2024, to celebrate our last weekly meeting of the school year. We tried the thrilling "walking on eggs", made elephant toothpaste and lava lamps, and enjoyed making our own delicious ice creams. It was an absolute blast!
Celebrate Earth Day Weekend
Math & Science Club will lead several activities there.

Meet Pharmacists
Meet a Mathematician
On March 3, 2024, we met Jessie Oehrlein, an atmospheric scientist and statistician/mathematician. Jessica was an active player in competition math, and is a grader at AoPS. She uses math and statistics to study atmospheric science, and she talked about the work she did across areas of math and stats!
High School Student Panel
On February 25, 2024, Math + Science Club hosted a student panel for middle schoolers and parents to ask questions about high school registration and extracurricular activities, including STEM, speech and debate, sports, music, chess, etc. We had high school volunteers from various school districts and backgrounds answering questions. Testimonials are listed below:
"Thank you to all the brilliant high schoolers who came to share their experiences with the kids (& parents). It was so inspiring for my young daughter to see so many bright girls speak positively about school, using time wisely, prioritizing sleep, minimizing distractions, finding positive friend groups. I know she felt inspired. I appreciated the messages to the parents - I feel inspired to be better too."
"My daughter’s highlight was having the high school girls teach the math class. It is so inspiring to young girls to meet brilliant older girls who are talented in math, physics, debate & chess. Thanks for sharing your time!"
"My son was also very inspired by the older boys who spoke today. Such an impressive panel!"
Meet a Computational Biologist
On February 18th, 2024, we had a roundtable discussion with Anna-Leigh, a computational biologist studying brain cells. Her work focuses on how brain cells get sick during dementia and to answer that she writes code to be able to see which proteins brain cells are making when sick. This is a very interesting article she wrote on her research: https://thesciencebreaker.org/breaks/neurobiology/solving-a-decade-long-mystery-neurons-hold-the-key-to-rare-neurological-diseases
